Deciding whether a Master of Education is right for you

Have you ever thought about becoming a principal or dean at a school? Have you ever wondered whether you would be any good at teaching higher education at a college or university? Are you good at counseling individuals and giving unbiased advice? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, a Master of Education degree could be right for you.

Master of Education degrees are usually reserved for educators or individuals who would like to work in educational administration. In fact, typical M.Ed. degree programs are broken up into different branches including Counselor Education, Educational Administration, and Preparation for higher education.

Students who wish to specialize in mental health counseling or overall guidance should enroll in Counselor Education programs to study psychology, social work issues discussed in sociology courses, and the law, particularly regarding counseling.

Educational Administration is the branch which applies to individuals who want to be on the path to obtaining a position of higher authority as a school administrator. For example, principal and deans are typically required to hold a Master's level degree, and study community issues and the law. In addition they will also be required to work on their leadership skills by participating in a series of internships and study/work programs to help them gain more experience.

Many students also study for Master of Education degrees in order to prepare themselves for teaching in higher education institutions. M.Ed. degrees can also be used by a student on the path to obtaining their Ph.D. Typically, these students are interested in expanding their current knowledge in their chosen fields.

In conclusion, a Master of Education degree is a good option for anyone interested in enhancing their knowledge or becoming more valuable in their career fields. Whether you wish to pursue a position teaching at higher education institutions or whether you'd like to be in charge as a principal or a guidance counselor at a local high school, a M.Ed. is a good branching off point.
