This is a question that frequently plagues me at work: would I have gotten further along at this company if I made my nose a darker shade of brown?
I look at the people that have been promoted to upper management in my company. I see a common thread of butt kissing that, quite frankly, turns my stomach. Yet I can't help but wonder: was it worth it? Does the end justify the mean?
Let's consider this scenario: you want a promotion. Chances are that you are going to try to move into a position that you are somewhat familiar with. If you work in customer service, you probably won't try to move into the finance department unless you have some experience. Let's say you want to become a supervisor in your department. So here is the question: what is the best way to do this?
I don't care how much you kiss up; if you get the position you will be expected to meet certain performance standards. The best way is to keep communication open with your superior. Track your performance with them. Find out what skills are necessary for promotion to your desired position, then hone those skills. Always show interest in your career and company. By doing this kissing up becomes unnecessary.
Ultimately, I don't think any number of articles on one side of the fence or the other will sway your decision if you disagree with me, but I think that kissing up in and of itself is a poor strategy. You will get much further focusing on the skills your job requires and showing simple common courtesy to those around you. Even if someone does get promoted due to kissing up alone, they will still be expected to perform. Success is still what drives business.
