Of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World (the Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt, The lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, The Statue of Olympian Zeus, Greece, The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Turkey) The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (Turkey) The Colossos of Rhodes (Greece) and the Hanging Gardens of Babylon) only the Great Pyramid of Khufu remains.
Even so, one may still view the foundations of the mausoleum (dismantled by the Templars and the stones used to build a nearby fort)as well as the foundations of the temple of Artemis (destroyed by arson by someone who wanted to make a name for himself - and, who, therefore, should never be named). The work shop of Phidias, the sculptor who created the statue of Olympian Zeus, is still there in Olympia and a very interesting site to visit. One may also see the spot upon which the ancient Pharos (lighthouse) stood in Alexandria and Rhodes, with or without a colossal staute, is a treat for anyone. The hanging gardens of Babylon are considered by many scholars second hand information and, quite possibly, a fiction. Still, if one travels in that area, it is pleasing to the mind to imagine the gardens as a reality in long-ago times supplying water and beauty in a region of aridity.
Finally, it doesn't matter which wonders are left or if they ever existed as reported by ancient writers (Herodotus) at all; the idea that humans could erect such monuments of magnificence inspire, still, the hearts and minds of artists, poets, sculptors, throughout time. The Statue of Liberty in New York City is said to be modeled after the Colossus of Rhodes. As long as the human imagination remains fetile and remembers the past, so long shall the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World remain wonderous and inspiring.
