Retirement is the perfect time to go back to school. Going back to school after retirement gives you the opportunity to learn about the things that interest you. After retirement we no longer have to take courses in our profession in order to get that promotion or get that better paying job. We can finally relax and study what we want, what we have always desired or had an interest in.
Of course we would not want to forget the fact that just because we retired we are done with our profession. Keeping updated on new developments in our occupational field is a plus. What if we had to go back to work. Not only that what if we missed it so bad we wanted to go back to work. Staying up on our marketable skills can and should be a good point to education in retirement.
A person in retirement could go to school and finish that Master or Doctorate degree and find themselves coming out of retirement. Only difference is, this time you could set down the guidelines you wanted to work by. You would probably be able to pick your hours and even days of the week you work. Why is that you may ask?
The baby boomer's are starting to retire now and with that will come somewhat of a decline in the workforce. Especially with the way many of the younger generation think of work. Highly skilled workers with the experience in many fields will be hard to find. This will create a gap that we as seniors must and will be called upon to fulfill. There will be many baby boomer's who are in good health that will retire or at least partially retire around age 60.
The longevity of life has been on the increase and the life expectancy is now around 80 years old. If we, at 60, go to school for four years and re-enter the work force we would have another 16 years or so of gainful employment where we would actually be in charge of our lives to more of an extent than before.
Do not wait for retirement to go back to school. It is always a wise decision to go to school and to learn whenever the opportunity arises. One can never have to much knowledge this is what keeps the brain as active as the body. Knowledge is exercise for the brain and it should be getting exercised daily.
If you do not want to work toward a degree when you retire, remember that senior citizens can attend classes as an audit student for a greatly discounted rate - This way it is not whether you pass or fail but whether you gain any knowledge and insight in your chosen courses.
