Love at first sight is not something that can be studied in any kind of scientific manner, and so we cannot ever really say unequivocally whether it exsists or not. What we can say, however, is that many people have experienced what they define as love at first sight, and therefore, that there is a strong possibility that one day we will come to accept the phenomenon as a reality.

Personally, I do believe in love at first sight, having experienced it myself. Seeing the man I am now engaged to on the other side of a building, our eyes met for one brief instant. The moment passed before I could blink, and I never knew if anything would come of it, but I knew the moment would last forever in my life. Looking deeply into the eyes of that man on the other end of the building, for however brief an instant, showed me a soul that I knew ran as deeply as my own, if not deeper. I knew without knowing how I knew that I had met my soul's match.

Love at first sight is not the same as love, though. Love at first sight is falling in love with the notion that you have met your matching heart in life. You love that you know somebody who can be your mate forever, and can spend each moment with you. You love that you now have somebody in your life that can be in your life forever. Yet, you do not love them. You don't know them, so you can't love them.

Love becomes different when you get to know the person, flaws and all, and you still love them. This love becomes much deeper and will see you through every hardship if you manage to get to this point and hang on to it. Love this deep must be nurtured, though, or it will die. Unlike the storybooks say, love is not self-sustaining. Love takes effort and work and time and life-long dedication. Anything less will cause the love to fail.
