Like an addition-to-the-family, a nanny holds an important role in yours' and your children's lives. There are many things to consider after the decision of hiring an individual to help out has been made.
A possible starting point would be to chart down everything you would like for your nanny to do for you and your children while under your roof. Consider an estimated wage that you find fair and are willing to pay for her services. While calculating, also come up with a round-about number of hours (per week) that you will be needing her help. These things give you and your applicants a good idea of the job listing and performance expected.
Now to start the search for the perfect individual. Consider your families values and beliefs (and perhaps even religion), when looking for the right nanny for you and your children. Also consider your children's habits and temperaments. For instance, the parents of a high-strung and active child may want to defer from hiring an older-aged nanny. Does your child have special needs? This is very important when eliminating applicants, as the parent (and child) need someone that can fill the large shoes of caring for this special child with confidence.
When you think you've found the perfect individual to fit your families' schedule and lifestyle, you should always ask for -and check up with- any references the nanny provides you. Career and criminal-background checks are also very important when choosing a nanny, as this information can tell you a great deal about the individual your considering. After finding the perfect candidate for the job, but before hiring her, a parent should try to make time to view the nanny interacting with the children before finally hiring and leaving them alone with her. This can give the parent a good idea of the type of personality and work-ethic the nanny has, as well as the way your child interacts with her.
Just as every child is different, so is every nanny. Place an ad in your local paper, or maybe even go through a service that specializes in finding nannies for families. Take your time, and do your research on every applicant you are interested in. Which ever way it is you choose to manage your search, remember that your final choice on a specific individual for your family and home is a very important one.
