Basics of feng shui

home, ensure that the doorway or corridor outside is left clean and tidy. Bright lighting, uplifting imagery and fresh flowers all greet the Chi in a positive fashion.

Chi energy tends to imitate the nature of both wind and water. It will always follow a natural route that offers the least resistance. Like water, it can also stagnate when there is not room for it to flow or circulate.

It is vital that you not only invite positive Chi into your home, but also encourage it to stay.

Having the back door opposite the front door of a property is a common problem in many homes. Chi, like wind, can enter through the front door and rush out of the back door.

One simple and cheap solution is to hang a five-tube, hollow metal wind chine on the inside of your back door, either from the ceiling or door frame. This is an excellent way to retain good Chi. The wind chime acts as a windbreak, slowing down the flow of Chi and preventing all of its energy from escaping out of the door.

A few simple changes around your home can make a real difference to the flow of energy within it. The first step is to clear away useless clutter.

Before working on the more subtle levels of Feng Shui within your home, have a good objective look at your space to see where there are accumulations of dead Chi.

Dead Chi pools are wherever accumulations of old possessions and clutter exist, so have a good spring clean.

Be ruthless, a good definition of clutter is possessions that you no longer use, or things that are broken or useless.

Like water, Chi energy has a tendency to stagnate in corners, so check every room and cupboard and clear away the dust and cobwebs.

When you have decluttered your home, you can begin to take a closer look at the arrangement of your furniture and possessions to ensure good flow of Chi.

A few simple measures, such as moving a bed or arranging some flowers, can make a big difference.

Once this is done, you will begin to benefit from a more positive flow of energy in your home.

We all have a desire for security while we rest, which dates back to when we were cave-dwellers. Here are a few tips to help you feel at ease:
Position your bed so you have a good view of the door from where you sleep.
Make sure your bed is not in line with the door or window; a draught of Chi will drain you of energy.
Avoid placing your desk so that your back is to the door; you need to see ahead in life and need to know what is going on behind you.
From your favorite chair make sure that you can see the door comfortably from where you sit.

Since the doorway acts as the mouth' to allow Chi to enter any room, check how it is hinged relative to the adjacent walls.

For active spaces, such as the hallway, dining room, lounge or kitchen, you need the door to open into the space. In other words, as you open the door, you get a full view of what is ahead of you. If the door opens onto an adjacent wall giving you a limited view, it is best to rehang the door. Bedroom and bathroom doors should not open fully, allowing Chi to enter slowly and quietly.

All Chi ultimately emanates from the Sun. Make sure that your windows are clean and bright to allow sparkling new Chi into your home.
