TIPS FOR LIVING A FRUGAL LIFESTYLE
Offhand I can think of two reasons why one would choose a frugal lifestyle: First, money is scarce; second, religious reasons. Because most of the time the first reason is the guilty party, we must assume we have to make the most of the least. How to go about it:
Make a budget and try to stick to it.
Eliminate your window shopping excursions. You are prone to forget the window and go inside the shop. This costs money.
Try preparing more meals at home instead of eating out. Most likely these will be healthier and much more nutritious. Buy fruit and vegetables in season, they will always be cheaper. Buy in quantities, whenever possible, to attain lower prices.
Walk, car pool, or use public transportation when possible to lower your car costs, such as gas, parking, oil, spare parts, etc.
Find out what activities, exhibits, museums, shows, are free in your area and take advantage of them. There are many of these available.
Stop your newspaper subscription and read it on-line, if possible.
Begin a savings plan and abide by your commitment to it.
Wash your best clothes by hand. This will ensure a longer life. Don't treat your clothes as if they are disposable items.
When traveling take advantage of the best possible offers, adjusting your schedules accordingly.
Compare prices before you shop. You will be amazed at the price differences for the same exact articles.
Refinance your mortgage/debts. Experts will come up with a variety of options for payments you can afford. Stick to these payments with religious zealot.
Mow your own lawn. The exercise will do you good and you don't have to pay anyone to do it for you.
Buy only what you need, not what you think you may need. Do not fall into the consumer traps. You really need very little. Ninety percent of the stuff you buy you don't really need.
Reduce your light bill. Turn off unnecessary light bulbs. Buy energy efficient appliances when it is absolutely indispensable to shop. Do not use A/C units and/or heaters unless it is absolutely necessary.
Try opening your windows when it's hot and try an extra blanket when it's cold. They're FREE!
