Turning to the yoga lifestyle

Yoga is not an exercise form. It is a lifestyle geared at helping you balance your physical, mental and spiritual health. Born from the ancient Indian civilization where the yogi's used to practice these postures so as to gain control on their mental health through physical postures that are held for a length of time. Over the years there have been a lot of interpretations of the yoga form and while the essence remains the same the purpose of the different types of yoga have changed to conform to each person's style and ability to adapt.

Hatha yoga, Vinyasa yoga,Ashtanga yoga are some of the few. If you are a novice to the yoga form before you start off doing things on your own it might be a good idea to try finding a class where they will teach you the right postures and how to hold them. If you are looking for some form of gradual cure for a pain or sleeplessness and such then it might be good to talk to your yoga instructor to help you out with that. Remember that yoga is not an instant formula like most of the exercise or diet programs that one sees in the market. it is a gradual life changing form of exercises that builds inner strength, mental and physical and at the same time makes the body more flexible and supple. In other words it might possibly be a good way to say that it is a wholesome exercise form that has a greater impact on oneself than regular exercise alone.
There are so many benefits to yoga when it is done the right way, so it is imperative that one finds the right instructor. Since most of the initial postures concentrate on stretching and releasing and at the same time allowing your mind to relax and concentrate it might be a good way to start the day. You could try some meditation techniques also before you go to bed that can help your mind relax and allow you to sleep more peacefully.
One good source of information (some of it is rather extensive if you are really interested) would be to read books by Stephen Cope. I think he really comes across to people interested in yoga both novices and the seasoned ones.
