Many people suggest that it is unwise to take time off after high school and do anything other than college. However, there are numerous ways in which time off from education can be very beneficial to would-be students. These beneficial alternatives to college manifest themselves in three overarching ways: travel, fulltime labor, and a mix between work and a junior or community college.
Travel is an alternative to immediate post-high school learning with many positive qualities. First, travel is an excellent source of experience. People who travel across the nation see and learn things about the country that they never would have had a chance to experience should they have gone directly to college. Second, travel is simply enjoyable, and can be an excellent way to strengthen old friendships and forge new ones. Third, travel is a great way to segue into independent life. Without mom and dad constantly looking over ones shoulders, young people are forced into making crucial decisions. Often they realize how wise their parents truly are.
Travel, however, comes with a few disclaimers. One important factor is finances. The traveler must have not only sufficient finances available, but must know how to wisely use those finances. Adventure can also end in calamity, and leave one simply desiring to go back home. There are numerous ways in which trouble can arise, such as disagreement among friends, car trouble, weather problems, accidents, and more. This should all be taken into consideration.
One cannot forget to also examine the possibility of international travel. Going overseas can be a great experience and can truly shape a person for the remainder of their life. Both the benefits and possible deterrents mentioned prior apply likewise to international treasure, but on a greater scale. Not only can the benefits be incredible, but the blunders can also be great, amplified namely by the distance one is from home.
Another alternative to immediate post-high school learning is fulltime labor. This option carries many benefits. First, and most obvious, is the financial benefit of working fulltime. But more than this, fulltime work provides a young person valuable insight into adult life. Such insight often has great bearing on the future education and or career of a young person. A third manner in which fulltime labor is advantageous for a young person is the experience gained in it. Fulltime work quickly matures a young person and provides them a much greater appreciation for the labors of their parents.
A third alternative to direct college admittance is a hybrid of education and work. This may be best ascribed to those unsure of their desired future. A student is able to work in a field of interest while taking care of core required classes. This is provides students the benefit of insight into what they want to do in the future, as well as a means to pay for that future.
Therefore, it is noticeably important for high school students to consider their numerous post-graduation options. Travel may be best for some, while fulltime labor best for others. A mixture of continued education and work may be the best options for yet others. The most important thing for students to do is to take time to discuss these options with their parent, teachers, and friends. They need to take time to examine their options and carefully decide their next step in life, which may or may not be college. College is great, but there are many alternatives to it.
