College admission interviews can be tough, but students who are prepared may end up impressing the admissions officer enough to earn extra points on their application. That can be important for students whose grades or exam scores are borderline. Students who want to make a good impression should prepare for the admission interview just as they would study for a test.
The first step in preparing for the college admission interview is to learn as much about the school as possible. Prospective students should know the approximate size, student-to-professor ratio, degree programs available, and other facts about the school. Student should use these facts in answering questions about why they wish to attend the school, what they plan to choose as a major, or what extracurricular activities they will participate in throughout their college years.
When students submit their college application to the school, they have to answer some questions and possibly submit an essay for consideration. Students should review the information they submitted so it will be fresh on their minds. It would be embarrassing for the admissions officer to ask about a specific thought in the student's essay, only for the student to forget why he wrote it or what it meant.
Students should show interest in the school by asking questions and staying attentive. Short answers and daydreaming will work against students above anything else. Students also should avoid expressing strong opinions about nearly anything, such as politics or war, and should try to stay positive. College officials want students in their school who will contribute to the school's community and promote a positive atmosphere.
While the college admissions interview is important, students should relax and just be themselves. Admissions officers will enjoy having a productive conversation with an energetic prospective student.
