Being someone that doesn't like to waste time on someone incompatible I pick places we can talk for the first real date. Of course there is sometimes a first meeting at say a bar, a church, a group gathering etc. But the formal first date should be a place to talk, to silently interview the person so to speak. I don't mean the type of interview where they realize that is what's happening, but the usual get to know them stuff.
Movies are out, no good, can't talk. Of course you talk about the movie afterward but that's about the movie, not about each other. I suggest stopping off for the drink of choice after work, then some dinner. Or better yet plan lunch on a Saturday that way no one is rushed or tired from work. A patio on a warm day is a must for me personally. I say this for a reason, that is one of my first key indicators if she's going to be fun or a prude with allergies to the outdoors. This, being an outdoors type myself, will give me my first clue before I even engage in a conversation.
Next, it's time to find out if she's a beer girl or not, either way is fine, but it tells alot about a girl. Actually only one of my girlfriends was a beer girl, most are Margarita's or abstain completely, all of which is fine, I just like to know who I'm dealing with so I can relate accordingly. If I had it my way it would be a beer girl however, but like the Rolling Stones said " you can't always get what you want". Next is the food, don't bother with that as any sort of clue though, usually on a first date she'll eat like a bird anyway. That's ok though the less chewing the more conversation. This is when you put together what you have learned so far and start the question and answer session, but of course don't make it seem as such. The deepest conversations I have is usually on the first date, again, no reason to waste time on someone that has a hang up over something. All of this should kill about 2 hours if the date is going well, if not then you say your goodbye's and no harm done.
Never plan a whole day of activities with a first date like you see on those date shows. You need an escape if they turn out to be a sour puss. Although I didn't take my own advise one Halloween after being newly divorced. I had met a girl at a dance and got her number, I called her the next day to see if she wanted to go to a Halloween party with me that day, she agreed and we had lunch before hand. That turned out ok, but still I don't suggest it. That was moving too
