When Solskjaer sent the ball crashing through the roof of Bayern Munich's net, it took an eternity for the moment to set in. Time stood still under the Spanish night sky. That surreal moment will forever be enshrined in Manchester United folklore.
Since that epic European night, Manchester United's triumph of 3 major titles has been described as a one-off achievement. Everything fell into place in that season for Manchester United. Players were hitting form at the right time, the team had strength in depth and Lady Luck seemed to smile upon them at the right moments.
Many are skeptical about any team replicating Manchester United's treble success. However, it was not too long ago that people refused to contemplate the possibility of a team going through a season undefeated in the Premier League. The "invincibles" of Arsenal obliged their critics by proving them all wrong. It can be argued that Arsenal's feat is harder to achieve compared to winning the treble. You can afford the odd slip up when it comes to winning the treble but to go through a season undefeated requires consistency through a long stretch of 38 games.
Manchester United won the champions league at a time when there were two group stages, compared to the one group stage format now. This means that you have much fewer games to play to win the champions league now.
Personally, I think it is only a matter of time before the treble is achieved again. Sooner or later, a season will come along where all the stars will align for one club to win it all. Astrology aside, the next club to achieve the treble will need the same basic elements that Manchester United possessed en route to the amazing triumph. Here is my take on the formula required:
