Illegal immigration is interesting because I believe immigration in and of itself is not the problem. Illegal immigration is a by-product of other issues and problems in the United States. A physical barrier is not needed, we only need to enforce existing laws better and remove the free lunch attitude we harbor in this country.
There are several main reasons why illegal immigration occurs and will continue, with or without the presence of a physical barrier. The first is economic pressure. Lets face the facts, the United States economy, even at its weakest, is the strongest in the entire world. Couple the great prosperity in the U.S. with Mexico's horrible, corrupt, and inefficient economy and there is a real need by many poor Mexican citizens to enter the U.S. illegally to work. The majority of illegal aliens enter illegally to make money and take it back to there homes and families. This isn't evil or manipulative, it's common sense. People go where opportunity is and take advantage as much as they possibly can.
This can be repaired by either two things: Mexico can reform itself and make it's economy stronger than the United States or the United States can continue to spiral it's economy until it drops below Mexico's. Either way, this will eliminate the United States immigration problem while creating a immigration problem for Mexico. If Mexico has a better economy and a better working form of government the United States will no longer worry about illegal immigration and will then have to worry about illegal emigration.
The second reason is linked to the first. How can illegal aliens with no real SSN or identification enter the country and get a job in the first place? This is easy, the majority of U.S. businesses that hire illegals do so because there is no real penalties to hire illegal aliens. Illegal aliens can do many of the same jobs lower income Americans can do but with the added bonus of having no taxes or benefits paid for them. Illegal aliens are an excellent source of cheap, tax free labor. Every day companies break laws and are not held accountable for their actions for fear that destroying companies that take advantage from illegal labor would somehow hurt the U.S. economy. I liken this line of thinking to the resistance to the abolition of Slavery over a hundred years before. The U.S. government needs to take responsibility and hold U.S. institutions accountable for the laws they break on a daily basis. If anyone has their
