Summer jobs are a fact of life for most college students. Restaurants, grocery stores, bars, and resorts fill up with students looking to make a few extra bucks during their summer vacation. But students who want to make money while working in a fun atmosphere should look around their community and see what it has to offer.
Sports fans may have options for catching a game or concert and earning some money at the same time. Stadiums, professional and semi-pro, and concert venues need lots of support staff to keep the fans happy and to clean up after events. Baseball, football, basketball, and hockey teams are located all over the country, and nearly every major city has a concert stadium. Students can start by calling the administrative offices of the venue where they are interested in working and ask how they can come on board. Often, workers can choose to work on a per-game/concert basis.
College students who like working with kids can get jobs at local community centers as lifeguards or counselors or umpiring for little league baseball, football, soccer, or some other sport. These would be great jobs for students who are studying to be teachers or want to work as administrators in community programs.
Working with animals is also a great option. Animal shelters are always short-handed, and downtrodden little puppies and kittens are in need of a helping hand. Experience working with animals can help students who are looking for a career in the veterinary or pet care businesses.
There are many non-traditional, seasonal jobs available for college students. Those who are looking for a summer job should think about their interests and look around for something that fits. It sure beats dealing with cranky restaurant patrons or drunks in a bar!
