Make your own herbal shampoo for great hair. Homemade herbal shampoos may not lather like commercial shampoos unless foam agents are added. Herbs help to improve hair and scalp. A good base for an easy homemade herbal shampoo and for all hair types is baby shampoo. Mix one part baby shampoo and five parts herbal infusion.
What herb is best for individual hair type?
Normal Hair - Choose any herbs, such as, lavender, chamomile, rosemary for growth, or marigold petals for blond hair.
Dry Hair - Choose lavender flowers, chamomile flowers, or marigold petals for blond hair.
Oily Hair - Choose rosemary leaves, lavender, or lemon grass.
Dandruff - Choose lemon grass or rosemary leaves.
How to make herbal infusions? Choose herbs for individual hair type. When boiling herbs replace hard tap water with distilled or rain water. Strain the herbs with cheesecloth.
Chamomile flowers help soften and lighten hair. For blond hair chamomile helps bring back natural highlights. Mix one pint of water and four tablespoons of dried flowers. Boil half an hour, cool, strain, and add to baby shampoo.
Lavender helps to stimulate hair growth and reduces itchy scalp condition. Mix one part water and five parts herb. Boil, cool, strain, and add to baby shampoo.
Lemon grass helps to tone the scalp and prevent dandruff. Mix one part water and five parts herb. Boil, cool, strain, and add to baby shampoo.
Marigold petals create a lighter hair color for blond hair. Mix one part water and five parts herb. Boil, cool, strain, and add to baby shampoo.
Rosemary leaves help with hair loss to unclog follicles and stimulate new cell growth in the scalp. Helps to control dandruff and enhance the color of dark hair. Mix one pint of water and one cup chopped rosemary leaves. Boil, strain, cool and add to baby shampoo.
Sage helps to repair damaged or fragile hair. Darkens lighter shades of brown hair and helps darken gray hair. Mix one quart of water and chopped sage. Boil 20 minutes or longer. The longer sage is boiled the darker the herbs. Add to baby shampoo. Leave shampoo on 15 minutes before rinsing to darken hair.
For other herbs use this simple formula to make herbal shampoo. Chop two teaspoons of herbs and place in a pot with one cup of water. Mix and bring to a boil. Let stand 20 minutes. Strain herbs with a cheesecloth and pour water into a bowl. Pour herbal water into a plastic container for shampooing hair. The mixture is good to store for one year, therefore, date the container and shake well before applying on hair in the future.
An alternative dandruff shampoo mix combines four aspirin tablets, three teaspoons of baby shampoo, and one-fourth cup apple cider vinegar. Mix in a bowl and let stand five minutes.
One drop of essential oil in herbal shampoo is optional for scent. Two drops of essential oil applied to hairbrush will leave hair with pleasant aroma.
Your own homemade herbal shampoo helps save money, creates healthier hair, and is a great personal gift for family, friends, or coworkers.
