Reflections: What is a redneck anyway?

What is a redneck anyway? Traditional and modern day meanings of the word redneck are slightly similar. Redneck was once uses to describe a farmer who, after spending hours planting and plowing in the fields would develop a redneck after being in the sun.The more modern translation of this word is a man or woman who is poor, country and possibly has a criminal record.

Modern day rednecks drink beer and listen to country and western music. They are not fond of communists, catholics or shoes. Rednecks are also sometimes called hillbillies because many rednecks live in the Appalachian mountains. You do not have to live in the in the mountains however, to be a redneck.

Rednecks sometimes have a 57 Chevy on blocks in their front yards instead of the usual statuary. Rednecks are usually descended from some great confederate general who served during the civil war and live an area where everyone is related to everyone else.

Rednecks love honky tonks, hunting and dogs. The families of rednecks usually enjoy a night on the town at the local Kentucky Fried Chicken and then off to the local race track to watch a tractor pull or demolition derby.

Rednecks, along with America's Appalachian culture are disappearing from the American scene and being replaced by more modern American cultural groups like the hip-hop culture.
