Wind farms are very definitely a good economical and environmentally safe source of electricity for the future. There are very few places in the United States or the world for that matter, that the wind does not blow at least some of the time. The manufacturers of the wind turbines are making them smaller and more efficient all the time and a lot of them require little more than a breeze to turn and generate quite a lot of electricity.
In my mind, wind farms and solar collectors are the two most practical of the energy alternatives for the future. Wind farms don't take near as much room though and there is literally no damage to the environment that I know of.
There are a lot of sources of power but there are none with the possible exception of tidal generators that are as environmentally friendly as wind farms. I worked in one of the biggest coal mines in the world and we produced 75 million tons of low-sulfur coal a year but there is still the problem of the waste from burning it. They said when I was there in the late 90s that they had enough leases and known coal reserves to last till 2025 with a lot more deeper in the ground.
Nuclear power is capable of producing a lot of electricity but with the political climate in the world today, having a bunch of nuclear power plants is kind of scary. It would only take one 9/11 properly targeted, to wipe out the whole country. With all the kooks and terrorists on the loose, I tend to shy away from anything nuclear. With the probable election of Barack HUSSEIN Obama as the next president, it scares me what he might do.
Another nice thing about wind generators and wind farms is that they do not take a lot of the land out of production where they are. The bases of the towers are not that big and the actual blades of the turbine are high enough in the air that they do not pose any danger to livestock or most farm equipment. I would hope that if a person was going to farm around them, they would know how high the blades are and how high their equipment was.
The only problerm I can see is that cattle might try to rub on the tower and wires so I would build a small fence around each tower and that would eliminate that problem. There would be very little production loss do to the wind generator.
In most of the states around here, if you generate more electricity than you consume, the utility comapanies are required to buy your excess. Where I lived in Wyoming, it would not take many years to recoup your initial investment and actually make some money with your excess electricity. There was a wind most of the time. You could easily generate plenty of electricity to run the house and barns and any other electrical pump or anything you might have.
I think that wind generators and wind farms are the most environmentally friendly of any of the options and will be the source of a lot of the electricity we use in the future.
