The first consideration when undertaking the task of finding and securing employment is to recognize the common mistakes that people make when setting about securing employment.
Lack of research/ researching the requirement of a job is essential if you intend to secure employment, this is a common mistake made in the job-hunting exercise. It is from research and the evaluation of your skills, which will be involved in the new position that will determine the value of your efforts. If this all adds up, then the first hurdle has been removed.
Using a one fits all' resume, another common mistake is to use a standard resume for all applications, ideally you should tailor your resume for the position for which you are applying by highlighting your attributes as they apply to the position you have researched, this document must remain an accurate account of your abilities and attributes. Even if the prospective employer has stated 'no resume' this exercise will be useful to you when completing the application form.
Application forms. Here the common mistake is to complete this form 'live' the problem here is that if you make a mistake, you are going to make a mess of the document, if you don't have a scanner or photocopying facilities, the chances are that you know someone who has, or as a last resort use a commercial copier which can be found in many shops for a small fee. Make a few copies of the form to practice on. You could of course make rough notes on a piece of paper, but remember that in some cases space on forms for writing is restricted, so it is best to use a copy to see how the wording fits into the available space.
The interview. The common mistake here is not being adequately prepared, hence getting tongue-tied when answering questions. Take both your resume (even if this was not submitted), and your copy of the application form these will act as aid memoirs, which will help you through any questions that you may have problems with. Remember, the interviewer(s) will expect you to be nervous at the interview, this to some extent shows that you have respect for the situation, this will in turn be respected by the interviewer(s). Another mistake is to appear too brash, which shows little or no respect for the situation.
Normally at the conclusion of the interview the applicant is asked if they have any questions, don't ask about pay, holiday or any other benefits at this stage. If you are asked if you would like to look around the working environment, give an enthusiastic 'yes please' and make the most of this opportunity, normally you will have a guide who will answer any questions that you may have, don't interrupt any workers with questions.
If all is well you will receive an invitation to accept the position. Here you are the interviewer, now you can ask about pay or other benefits, just be reasonable with any questions, and the job is yours.
