Should illegal immigrants be entitled to receive benefits? As I consider this question, the faces of the many Hispanic children that go to school with my children flood my mind.
We do not ask if they are illegal before we teach them. We do not ask them if they are illegal before we feed them. We have family advocates that help these families get to a doctor, fill out paper work, and understand what's going on in their child's classroom.
Many of these children were born in the United States. Their parents are illegal. Do we snatch them from their home,put them in foster care,send their parents away, and move on? Perhaps the government should tell these children they are not worthy of citizenship? If you do not provide them with care, that is exactly what you have done.
We need immigration laws. We need them to be better, stronger and enforced, but we never need to become a country that determines who is worthy of care. Basic human needs, food, clothes, housing, education,and medical attention are not luxuries that we should have to prove worthy of receiving. If a stranger knocks at your door do you ask to see his social security card before you offer help? I hope this wonderful country never becomes that heartless.
