The New Testament does not have the distinction of clergy vs. laity that we have in todays church society. When you look into the Bilbe they were one people, or as christian is translated " the people of God". The church was one body with leaders among them. The definition, aside from being a member of the clergy, is to help somebody that is in need. Isn't that what all Christians are to do? The world is sick and burdened with the disease of sin, so we are to bring them the good news of Christ, who is the Great Physician.
Biblically we are all called to go into the world and to proclaim the gospel of Jesus. The ministers or clergy is to train us to do so. That is the job of the leaders of the church. Somehow, througout time, we have been satisfied to be called laity( which means second class) because there is not as much effort in that. We depend upon the pastors to do all the ministering, care taking, and work that goes on in the church.
The Bible teaches us that we are a royal priesthood and a holy nation. That should excite us to the point of motivation to be more than pew warmers on Sunday morning. We should be busy about the Fathers business and out ministering the gospel of Jesus to all that we come in contact with. By being like Jesus, and displaying His attitudes, by commited study, and ferverant prayer we equip ourselves and each other for the calling He has given us, which is to spread the gospel over the earth.
