There are a number of differences between colleges and high schools. The most obvious difference is the age. We have all gone through our most awkward times and learning to deal with issues of sex and love through high school and by the time we reach college we are ready, for the most part to pursue our future. Other differences between high school and college are some of the reasons why some freshmen have such a hard time adjusting to college life.
First of all, the most popular students in high school will have to face a hard reality that they will have to start fresh in college. They may not be as well known in a large college setting and some students have a troubling time dealing with such an issue. The amount of friends the high school student had will change as they continue on to their college years. For the high-schooler that was not that popular probably will adjust easier knowing that there will be a new crop of friends to achieve having and a new life of possibilities. They will meet new people with similar interests.
Another difference is in high school the days are more structured comparing to college. In college, students can pick and choose what time they want their classes. Each class is usually taught every other day in college rather than every day in high school. For instance, if a college student is taking Math, Science, and English, chances are they will have all three in one day, every other day.
There are those times where the student may not be able to go to class. When this happens in high school the student has to have their parent call in for them. When this happens in college the student simply does not go and chooses to explain to the teacher why they were absent. Anytime there's a question regarding the student's performance in class, in college the teacher will question the student whereas in high school they question the parent and may ask the student only if they suspect something might be going on at home.
All in all, college offers much more freedom for the students compared to high school. College students are given opportunities to live in dorms, away from their parents to begin living a life on their own and as independent individual. High school keeps the student under the parent's control despite the fact that many times the student wants to break free and become their own individual.
