Most careers of the future will require some level of basic, if not advanced, computer training. As educators we are to provide students with the skills they needs to be successful in the future. In the classroom of today, computer training helps prepare the modern student for life in this century.
Student's today are faced with vast challenges that the generation of their parents could not possibly understand. While we should never stop teaching the fundamentals, we must acknowledge and accept the challenge that, in the future, most jobs will require some level of computer aptitude. As educators, it is our job to prepare our students for their future and computer skills are vastly needed for their future.
For example: Students who choose to become farmers will not only tend to their fields, but will need to be able to read the latest research on plants, pesticides, etc. via the Internet. Owning a hair salon might require computer based banking, or just the ordering of supplies. While it's impossible to foresee all of the needs of all jobs any given student might choose for their future, an educators job is to hand the student the tools they need to be successful at that future.
If it is our jobs as educators to teach out students the needed material to be successful as adults, then some level of computer based education must be taught to all students.
