I believe that the children of today's schools need as much nurturing as they can get and where they can get it safely without any strings attached.
Today's schools show so much lack of trust where it comes to teachers and students. A lot of children do not get any attention, affection, concern, from the parent of the house. Unless it's negative. What they did not do or should have done. So many single parents try to make the oldest child the partner of the household with adult responsibilities in which they are not mature enough to handle. (i.e., cooking, cleaning, babysitting). But, our society is so demanding on American households today that it demands that the parents both work one good job or in most cases two or three jobs just to maintain and get by. Which usually leaves the children to come home to an empty house, prepare dinner (if there is food in the house) and babysit and try to get some homework done.
I am a Mom of two growing girls 13 and 9 and my husband and I believe in teaching our children how to be responsible (i.e, clean up their room, take out trash, wash and some light cooking) We want them to know how to take care of themselves when the time comes. None of their daily chores are more than one hour to do or maybe even less. My husband and I believe in teaching our children how to do things so they can take care of themselves when they move out. But, we do not believe in not putting too much on them that they can not handle.
Most children have so much pressure and too much "adult" responsibilities on them at such an early age. Many of them struggle in school and a few just give up on school all together. A lot of them have major problems at home in addition to the pressures they already have such as a parent on drugs, alcohol, or abuse. So many experience and see so much at home and on TV that it makes them anxious in the world, unable to focus, settle down or simply just to go outside and be a normal kid for they fear what has developed on the inside.
School is suppose to be an outlet that is safe and nurturing. A place for children to be able to learn, explore, discover. A place where teaching is done. A place where they can learn how to positively express themselves, as a kid. Find out what they are good at doing. A place to get sound feedback, encouragement. A place that is safe. The teachers should be there for them and to take an interest in them without any strings attached, and notice what they are doing, give compliments and corrective criticism on what they do.
Teachers who have been blessed with the ability and or power to bless these children, should use it to nurture and mold our tomorrow's leaders of this country not abuse it for their own personal satisfactions. So many of the teachers today lack maturity and their mindsets are like children themselves. They try to be on the child's level to reach them. Some strive to become the BFF of the child instead of a being a role model. Our children see the teachers on the news who have crossed the line of student teacher relationship and it has created a lack of trust. When there is no trust, a foundation of learning can not be built between the student and teacher. Leaving our children again with no place to feel love in its true sense. Patience, kindness, encouragement, genuine concern. Which leaves us a generation of non trusting, unfocused, unfulfilled, selfish society leading this country.
