Iraq, Turkey and the US Congress: The politics of denouncing genocide

by GOPMOM

Is there anyone left in America who hasn't figured out that this declaration is merely an under handed way of offending the Turkish government, driving them to kick us out of the country? Will the Democrats stop at nothing to cripple the war effort? Do they really believe that the President will throw in the towel when he is faced with a shortage of supplies in Iraq? NO. This will only put more troops at risk, as military leaders scramble to find new supply routes into the region. This will cost more money. This will weaken our international support and quite possibly extend the war.

Before I get accused of denying the genocide, I will admit that history confirms it did happen. Some even suggest that the success of the genocide was the inspiration Hitler needed to begin his own. But why, after 90 years or so, is it so important to recognize this now?

If Nancy Pelosi wants to start a campaign of addressing all historical injustices, then let her start at home. Why not propose slavery reparations? What about all the displaced Native Americans? Why the Armenians? Why now?

This is just another pathetic attempt by Nanc' to clog up the halls of Congress with meaningless and ineffective legislation in hopes of challenging and embarrassing the President. Will she ever understand that her attempts are fruitless? Why is she wasting our time and money?

There is a perfectly logical explanation as to why the President would honor the Dalai Lama, but not recognize the Armenian Genocide. It's called political practicality. As sometime grown-ups, we understand that often we must put aside our most heartfelt wishes and act reasonably. China isn't cooperating with us these days. So a meaningless political dig is appropriate. Turkey has proven to be an extremely valuable ally in the war on terror. Let's not try so hard to piss them off.
