A Seasonal Job Turned into A Yearround Position
Last summer, I decided that I needed my first job. I am 24 and have never worked in my life! I had no time to work because I was constantly attending school. Every summer, fall and spring semester, I had a full course load. The only money that I earned came from some freelance writing. I earned $150 for an article that was written for a Spanish newspaper and $40 for some health articles. I was ready to enter the workforce. I decided to apply for a job at university. I saw that they were hiring in the journalism library. The pay would be $7.09 an hour and it would only involve working 2-3 hours per day. The job duties would require sitting behind a desk at the computer and helping patrons. It sounded like a good opportunity. I would be able to spend the summer surrounded by journalism books and at the same time earn some money.
I got the job and began training in early May.Its a small library on UF's campus so it would not be long before I was familar with checking books in and out. I found that I could use the computer to get a lot of my work done that I needed to do for an on-line journalism class. But I also gained a lot of psychic income. It felt good to help my fellow students look for books and conduct research. The simple act of pulling a book off the shelf or opening up the study room made me feel good. My responsibilities increased as time went on. I was able to continue working into the fall semester. I even open the library from time to time which involves getting there at 7:30 a.m.! I like my job at the journalism library. If you are looking for a cool summer job, then take a job in your major college department. Not only will you gain people skills, but you will learn a lot more about your subject area!
