Community College After Graduate School: Learning Real World Skills
Graduate school can be an enriching experience. But at the same time it can also be very draining. Academic knowledge can interfere with an individual's ability to obtain real world skills. This can leave you unprepared for the real world. I graduated with a Masters degree at 19. I was still a teenager and did not even know how to type. So I went to Kingsborough Community College. It was beautiful school surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. A great place to learn all about computers and typing.
The continuing education classes were filled with students who were older than me. Most of them already had years of real world experience and their own families. Simultaneously, I learned how to type and about life. My teacher always told us a lot of great stories. We also spent a lot of time improving our typing speed. The other class I took was an introduction to windows. The professor was always making jokes. We would laugh and learn new stuff about moving files. It was nice to learn without feeling the pressure of grades. This is a big strength of continuing education. You can focus on learning skills and not worry about failing the class. At the end of the fall semester, I was an expert typist and knew all about windows. I still had my graduate school education but there was also a new found appreciation for real life education. In fact, my teacher even gave me a computer to take home and practice on!
