For many of us, we have a passion in reading, and discussing the content of the book. There is the trouble of slotting and putting in time for reading though, and many times we may seem to be getting less reading than what we desire. A great way to help with your reading is to be in a reading club better yet, host your own reading club.
Book clubs are not limited to clubs hosted at one's host or a specific location. Turn on the computer, go on the Internet, and you'll find many discussion rooms for book clubs that have the same interest in you. Joining the appropriate club or having members that have the same passion as you is important. You would find it quite boring if you seem to have a higher passion for discussing about the latest book.
1. One of the main things to consider is the frequency of when the meetings will take place. Generally, book club meetings meet once a week although some may decide to meet twice a week while others a couple of times a week. It depends solely on the decision of the majority of the group and the time they can set aside.
2. After considering the frequency, it is important to consider the times that each meeting will start at, and the duration of the meetings. You need to provide time for new members to be introduced and for older members to catch up on activities and past discussions. It is important to set-up a time that will allow more of your members to enjoy the book club.
3. Set-up a trial period where a member can easily leave the group with no questions asked. Some members may decide after a while that a book club is not what they were looking for to begin with; some may decide that your group does not really suit their needs. Having a diverse group will increase the knowledge and information that is being shared and discussed in the group.
4. Have a book list to start with. Welcome your members to add different varieties of books to the list, and have a new member choose the new book each time. This will help rotate the variety and keep everyone's interest going in the different books. Give every book a chance! If having a new member choose a book does not sound good, have a vote, and let the majority decide which book will be next. Also, make sure you choose a book that everyone in the group can get their hands on.
5. Assign a leader (since you're hosting the book club, I'm assuming it is you). Having an assigned leader to start the discussions really help with encouraging the discussions, and start everything up. A successful book club requires an efficient leader. Take the initiative to get things rolling.
6. To get things heated up, celebrate the member's birthdays, and perhaps have your group work together as a team with different volunteer opportunities. The more bonding that goes on between the group, and the more familiar with each other the members are, the better conversations there will be.
Hosting a book club is not hard, but keeping it going on certainly is. With different techniques, you can make your book club shine above the rest.
