Turning to the yoga lifestyle

I woke up in so much pain I could only lay there and quietly cry. I didn't want to wake my husband. After a while I slowly got out of bed and made my way out of the room by holding on to the walls and fighting the pain. I didn't make it very far when I felt something different happening in my body. I cried out for my husband and I don't remember anything after that until I woke up in his arms.

Apparently he heard me call and came running. He caught me as I fell to the floor in a dead away faint. Not the sweet swooning of love, but the incredible pain filled horror that would become my life for the next several months. He rushed me to the emergency room and they concluded it was my back and one of the disk in the lower region.
Well, duh! I figured that much out from the pain. After that it was doctors wanting to over medicate me which I accepted and doctors wanting to do surgery right away or expensive shots to my spine. I had insurance so it was like finding the cash cow of their dreams. Sorry, I was going to do my research first even if it meant wanting to die. I did my research and discovered so many other that had the same surgery recommended for me. They ended up in wheel chairs for the rest of their lives in extreme pain and addicted to medications doctors like to refuse.
I decided to try yoga. I had taken a class in college and knew the basis of it. I cried through weeks of gentle yoga. But I kept going. One day it just happened. I don't know how or why, but I felt a pop and a burn so intense I wanted to die.
Then the pain drained away and for the first time in a very long time I felt more pain free. It still took much more work but I was walking without help within a month and I was finally able to kick the pain pill habit in three short months.
It has been four years and I still have pain off and on. There are days when I can barely get out of bed. But by staying faithful to the yoga lifestyle I am walking. I swim, I love and I exercise and have fun. I have not had to take pain pills for a long long time. I would recommend yoga over surgery as a first try for anyone about to go under the knife. It's not likely to make your situation worse and it could be the answer to living a normal life again.
