Should the US boycott the 2008 Beijing Olympics? If the U.S. boycotts the Olympic games in 2008 the spirit of the games will once again be shattered by international politics. The Olympics, occurs only every four years and during that four year interval young athletes sacrifice and train for a chance to compete. It is unfair to destroy the dreams that our athletes have worked so hard to obtain by using the Olympics to make a political statement.

Every country has the right to bid to host the Olympics. The U.S. has hosted the Olympics before and would feel very insulted if other countries refused to participate in the games because of where they were being held and used by them as an international political pawn.

Politics and Olympic competition do not belong in the same arena. The Olympic games should not be boycotted or used by any nation as a political tool. The games are intended to promote international competition among all nations irregardless of political ideologies.

Many countries have used the Olympic games to make a political protest or point, including the United States. This misuse of the games should not be allowed by any country not even the United States. The U.N. should be used for settling conflicts between nations not the Olympic games. The United Nations is a more appropriate medium for voicing protests whether they are political in nature or otherwise. The Olympics does not represent any political ideology, race or religious beliefs yet they are consistently abused by countries as a means of political protest.

Countries who use the games as a political sounding board should not be allowed to compete in the Olympics for subsequent games. This action should help them to realize that politics and the Olympics do not mix and that boycotting is detrimental to the international spirit of the games.
