Childhood Obesity Linked to Junk Food
As parents, we don't want to deal with negative responses from our children. We would rather live in peace, so sometimes we do not correct poor behavior. Childhood obesity should not be blamed on children. They like unhealthy food, and they are eating it often. Many parents model this behavior every day. Children who see us take over-sized portions, are going to imitate the practice.
Children need to run and play. This is how they exercise. Children do not exercise at pizza parlors with arcades, or playing video games on t.v. Nor are they inclined to make a habit of going to the gym. But they will walk or ride their bikes to school with friends. They will even ride their bikes to the park, or a friend's home in the neighborhood.
Teach your child to cook. Our children love hanging out with us. Preparing meals together is a very interactive activity. It feels really good to sit down to a meal that everyone made together. Even if the recipe turns into disaster, the quality time spent together was worth the effort.
You should make family meals that are healthy. You should try to offer a variety of food, to ensure that your children will eat at least some of the things presented. It is important to make the food more edible than necessary. There are some foods that no one is going to eat, regardless of the health benefit. Keep this in mind when planning and preparing your meals.
Plant a garden or fruit tree with your child. Children enjoy eating what they grow. If you don't have space, take them to nearby orchards. Many local orchards offer activities during picking season. Children like to help choose what gets put on the table. You could always take your child to the produce section of the grocery store if you live in the city.
Let junk food be part of your diet. Everyone eats fast food, so trying to eliminate it from your diet completely, will only invite frustration and failure. Plan a monthly pizza night, or buy burgers from the drive through once in a great while. No one gained too many pounds from having a treat now and then.
Childhood obesity can decrease if we are willing to change our habits. Local fast food franchises are already assisting our efforts. Many of them offer healthy alternatives to French fries and soda. Getting your child to choose these alternatives is a matter of parenting. Knowing when to allow the treat, instead of refusing the choice, is an art worth developing. In the process, you may end up having a happier, healthier child.
