How to find a great massage therapist for your stress

Attempting to find the right massage therapist sometimes feels like finding the needle in the old haystack. You open the phone book and are deluged with listings, you start an internet search, only to be discouraged at the many businesses you see provided.

Maybe you were referred to massage by your family doctor. Or maybe your friends have all but convinced you that you MUST have one. Maybe you are one of the unfortunate ones who desperately needs massage in order to recover from an accident or injury.

Your first step should be to decide how much you are able to afford for a massage. If related to an accident or injury, make sure that your health provider has given you the proper referral or prescription for massage therapy. It is sure an added bonus to get your aches and pains massaged away while it's being paid for by an insurance company!

If you are looking to find massage therapy at a very reasonable cost, check with local massage schools. Often, students are required to provide a specific number of hours before they can graduate, and what better atmosphere to gift yourself with a massage, at a minimal charge! Typically the setting provides for curtained areas for your massage and is very private. The only drawback to a massage school is that the ambience can sometimes be interrupted by your next door neighbor, when you are only separated by a piece of material.

The latest trend in massage therapy is to purchase a membership, providing monthly perks, a certain number of massages to be used in a specific time frame, and incentives for referrals.

As with many other spa-related services, sometimes the best avenue for finding the perfect therapist is to simply ask around. Ask for references from your friends and co-workers. When you call to schedule an appointment, ask the therapist direct questions, such as:

1. What kind of atmosphere or environment do you like best when giving a massage (some therapists prefer full light and windows, where others use candles and dim lights).

2. Do you specialize in any specific treatments (hot stone, reflexology, etc.).

3. How much time do you allow between appointments (This is a big one - After you have just been relaxed to the utmost, the last thing you want is to be rushed out!)

4. Do you have both male and female therapists available.

However you go about finding the perfect massage therapist for your needs, congratulate yourself on taking the first step! Massage therapy is one of the best ways to reduce stress, heal your body and simply take some time out for YOU.
