What reason could possibly justify taxing me for using the internet? That I'm wasting my time online when I could be much more productive offline? Of course it's ridiculous to tax people if they're not being productive. In fact, just look at who makes those taxes. Last year, the 109th Congress met for only 101 days, the fewest days in session in one year since World War II.
But suppose that the slight possibility that the current Democratic Congress gets its act together comes true, and Congress passes a tax on using the Internet. If people had this tax to think about, naturally they would not go on the Internet as often. Without everybody on the Internet every waking minute of the day, what would happen to our economy? People wouldn't be able to check their e-mail and personal websites every few minutes without thinking about paying for being unproductive. Personal sharing sites like blogs and Youtube would turn into havens for the rich since the poor wouldn't be able to pay those taxes. Daily bloggers would stop after losing their non-existent reading base and quality director's cut videos would cease to exist as a result of a dearth of unproductive watchers and ever less productive directors.
The money that would be collected from these taxes would probably go straight into funding for the all-important war, and that's exactly what we don't need right now. Less money should be spent on the crucial war on terrorism and more should be kept in the pockets of Americans where it belongs.
