Are our foods safe from overt or inadvertent intrusions to health? Yes! Are our foods safe from negative covert influences or sinister exploitation, NO!
For the average consumer our food supply is sufficiently guarded against dangers of pollution, shelf life degradation, or fraudulent tampering. But what about the less obvious safety being circumvented due to excessive profiteering, ignorance, or personal agendas? Suppose we examine these three areas a bit closer.
PROFIT MAKING. It is the heart and soul of the capitalist system, which the United States has been subscribed to since the Declaration of Independence. It allows business to be done according to "buyer bewares" and "bottom line" dictates that always guide its functions. So what happens when this is applied to foodstuffs that effect our health so rigorously?
Left unchecked, such principles lead to extreme competition for the dollar and eventual conversion of kitchen's into sophisticated chemical research laboratories that have brought us every pleasure to the palate imaginable (but at what health safety cost?). Processing and marketing has become big business and the psychological make-up of the consumer has been studied to the point of manipulation. Who doesn't go to any food market today and see evidence or just have a sensation that they are being "subliminally" enticed into buying something they don't even want or need?
The final results of extreme and self-serving profiteering can be observed through the obvious changes that are being recognized in health breakdowns occurring in increasingly epidemic proportions. Foods have become distributed within larger market areas, seeking larger market shares. Ultimate results are unsafe commodities being developed and promoted leading to unsafe nutritional choices being made by consumers.
IGNORANCE. The safety factor of food related to the business interests was mentioned first because the result of it's effect on food have people remaining and growing ignorant to safety essentials in deciding what to eat. Ignorance does not mean stupid or unable to learn, rather that knowledge is simply not present.
Much like the phenomena whereby a frog doesn't jump to safety from water being heated SLOWLY under him, people have responded to appeal and convenience rather than safety/health issues when creating family eating traditions. In Isaiah 5:13 of the Bible: "my people are gone into captivity, because they have no knowledge: and their
