I am a confirmed pessimist, but before we get all narky about it, let me give you my reasons, then maybe examine the whole 'glass question' as a whole.
I see the glass as half empty. That is, if something is not presented to me, I'm not going to worry about it that much. If I spent my time wanting a full glass when I haven't got one, my ability to utilize the water (sorry guys milk is lovely but water is better - cleans you out more) in there is denigrated. To me, keeping mindful of what you don't have is as important as using what you do, but less so. It's a pessimism born out of utility, if you will.
Now, as is my way, I'd like to ask some questions in relation to the metaphor being used that will most likely complicate it even more, but that I still like to think about from time to time, as it adds interesting flavour to the whole quandry. First off, the glass is half full, but what is it full of (I've already alluded to this I know but let's give the philosophical musing a solid start eh)? If it's half full, how big is it? Did we pour the whole bottle in and it's so big that it took it all but didn't fill up? Was it even a bottle? I like to think sometimes I'm standing underneath the downpipe during a lovely summer storm and perhaps it's only half full because the thunder scared me back under the verandah. Maybe I can order another one? Do they have the liquid I seek in stock? I'm not sure if you've heard the song 'Pub With No Beer', but I assure you it throws the whole 'half full, half empty' question into a different perspective. Do I even want what's in the cup? I can't drink ice. Or straight vodka, come to think of it. It's all these things and more that seem to me to be a logical progression when asked 'Is your glass half empty, or half full?' On second throughts, make mine a coke, any amount, and let's get back to work.
