You wake up and draw back the curtain - and your beautiful lawn is spotted with mole hills. There is a way to get rid of these pests without having to resort to inhumane methods; in fact this method of mole deterrence is probably the easiest and most animal-friendly.
All it takes is a small investment in some beach windmills - the colourful, plastic kind that you stuck in sandcastles when you were small, the kind that is probably spinning in your sandpit as you read this. When these windmills are stuck into the ground, vibrations are sent through the earth, disturbing the moles and annoying them enough to make them leave and set up home somewhere else. The moles dislike the vibrations because they interpret them as signs of human or animal activity. Having a couple of windmills planted in strategic places in your garden will help to deter them for as long as the windmills stand.
If you'd rather trap the little monster, there are various mole traps on the market ranging from catch-and-release traps to more vicious contraptions that kill the mole as soon as it is caught. However unless you find pleasure in mole-hunting, you should have no need to trap them, as once the windmills are planted the moles will have vanished within days. All that remains is to shovel all that spare earth back to somewhere it is needed. Try digging it into flowerbeds; the high-quality soil will have been tilled by the mole and so will often be fine enough to use for bedding seedlings.
