Why hockey is a dying sport in the USA

This title should be rephrased "Why hockey is a dying sport in some parts of the USA" because I have to admit I was shocked by this title. I am a San Jose Sharks fan and if you hang out in the south San Francisco Bay area long enough, you will soon find out that most everyone else there is too. The HP Pavilion is on around it's 30th sold out game in a row carrying on from last season and it is rare to have anything under a full house at the Shark Tank. Can the same be said about the Oakland Raiders, San Francisco Forty Niner's, Golden State Warriors,Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants? Yeah theses games sell out, but not as consistently. Admittedly the arena is smaller for hockey but Sharks fans are loyal and plentiful regardless.

One reason it is less popular than other sports is that it is more expensive to attend a hockey match as well as play the sport. There are limited and expensive youth facilities for hockey in most towns whereas other sports are far more accessible.
Another reason could be the "un-american-ness" of Hockey as it originated in Canada not like the all American sport of football. Also, hockey season is very long unlike sports like football and the truth is people's attention spans just aren't that great anymore. Same goes for why baseball has become less popular.
Many friends of mine say the smallness of the puck and the strange rules make hockey tough for them to watch. If in fact hockey is a dying sport, it is still alive and well in many parts of the country and it is a highly entertaining sport with amazing athletic talent and I hope it sticks around.
