Advantages of online universities

With the advent of Blackboard, Turnitin.com, and lecture podcasts, even more traditional universities are switching to the online paradigm. No longer are Online Universities relegated to the laughable status of pseudo-schools, they are now looked to by students, faculty, and major Universities alike as technological frontrunners, pioneering the way to more effective learning situations.

Online Universities provide an opportunity for students who must work traditional jobs, attend to family matters, or live in an area without University access to partake in the worldwide exchange of information. No longer does the ivory tower of the University elite exist. As more and more traditional Universities begin posting readings online, creating website with activities and lesson plans, and offering high quality resources to its students via the internet, the gap between Online Universities and traditional Universities closes.

In this way, the strengths of Online Universities are able to shine. Perhaps the most obvious strength of O.U.'s is the notion that class time and location no longer play a role in course selection. Students are free to select classes that fit their needs and interests, not just their schedules.

A further strength of this kind of University is the fact that students who may not have the motivation or inclination to go through the college admissions process may enroll in an Online University due to its smaller perceived level of commitment. As a result, thousands of people gain access to the wealth of knowledge found in the University system that might not otherwise be afforded them.

Finally, Online Universities require students to acquaint themselves with computer and internet technology, something that many traditional college students are able to avoid. This give the students an advantage in the job market while allowing them to apply skills, not just knowledge, to their future lives.
