Deciding whether a Master of Education is right for you

A Master of Education degree is necessary for some professions. There are some occupations that require the upward progression of the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral phases of education. Depending on what you want to do with your life in the working world after formal education will determine whether or not a Master of Education is necessary in order to arrive at your career destination.

There are some professions that do not require a Master's degree to enter a doctoral program, and in these fields, a bachelor's degree is sufficient background. There are some professions and careers that allow entry level positions without a master's or a doctorate, and the bachelor's degree is sufficient. These are generally assistant or teaching positions that do not carry the responsibility of the professional with the highest degrees.

Another consideration is affordability. Obtaining a master's degree is expensive and time-consuming. If your career is one that will not be affected by lack of a master's degree, you may want to opt out of this program. Find out if it is necessary for your field of work.

All of this means that it depends on your career plans, what degrees you will need to obtain. Careful research is essential so that you will know your direction and be able to plan ahead for it. High school guidance counselors should also be able to advise you on the requirements of the field you would like to enter, and tell you what degrees are essential.

With the help of a counselor, advisor, or on your own, be sure to check your state's licensing requirements for the career you've chosen. Start early to ask questions and find out what will be required for you to achieve your career goals.
