Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a doctor? Do you ever think about what bankers do on a daily basis? Do you want to sit in on a murder trial with a defense attorney? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then job shadowing may be for you!
Many companies and individual professionals offer students the opportunity to learn more about a profession through job shadowing. Job shadowing allows students to get a first-hand look at what these professionals do on a daily basis. Professional mentors are individuals who hold a variety of different positions. Students essentially follow their mentors on a daily basis for a period of time to gain more knowledge about what life is like in their professional field of choice.
Not only will students be allowed to experience a day in the life of their mentor, they will also have the opportunity to ask important questions about their mentor's educational and professional experiences. For example, if a student wishes to know the benefit of taking English literature courses if they want to be a lawyer, their mentor can show them exactly how important the analytical skills they learn in school are to creating successful briefs or breaking down particular cases.
In addition, students will also benefit from asking their mentors about what college major is required or preferred in their field. This will allow students to begin formulating academic plans that will put them on the road to becoming a professional in their chosen field.
Job shadowing is an extremely beneficial opportunity for high school and college students, particularly those who are unsure of what they want to do with their lives, and which professions are better suited for them than others. If you have the opportunity to participate in a job shadowing program, I highly recommend signing up today!
