Apathy and gender equality

I think a reason people may be more apathetic about issues like gender equality is that the things which need to be fixed are less visible now. There's a big difference between not having an essential right like the right to vote, and hearing some obscure and general stat about how women make less in the workplace then men. It's also less applicable to the entire population as well, since not all women will have suffered this discrimination as with voting.

I for one would ask whether the feminists of today are the feminists of a generation or two ago? Do today's 'feminists' make the mistake of going too far in trying to find a cause to champion? Abortion is the hot-button issue for today's feminists, but there is a difference between standing up for your fundamental rights and declaring your right to potentially destroy the life and rights of someone else. As the old cliche goes, your right to throw a punch should end where the other person's nose begins. Or to put it another way, hypothetically speaking, if gender equality were to be completely reached, would feminists then cross the line in seeking rights they shouldn't have which infringe upon the rights of others in their zeal to continue their cause?

Perhaps it is a case of mixed focus. Protecting the single mother is about more than just creating equal pay for all. It's about more than just making the men pay child support. When we are going to ban this abominable 'irreconcilable differences' garbage from the courts? Is it not hypocritical and absurd for people to swear "until death do us part" in the chapels while being able to divorce for any little reason? That is true gender inequality, not providing adequate protection for the women in marriages by allowing such a practice to essentially nullify the protection of marriage for women. That is what needs to be changed. The issue of women being able to vote was solved long ago. One should take care that later advocates do not hijack the cause as their own once it has been solved to support possibly selfish agendas far different from the original one.
