All Kissimmee roads do not lead to theme parks, which is welcome news to nature loving tourists! Not far from the roller coasters and the bright lights of fantasy worlds exists a world of pristine beauty, amazing wildlife, and sights only Florida can provide. Whether traveling with kids or spending time with friends, the area is a treat to the eyes with sights such as herons, alligators, and lush vegetation.
One not to be missed nature must-see is the Nature Conservancy Disney's Wilderness Preserve. Located just a few miles from the Kissimmee theme parks, the preserve offers 12,000 acres of the pine flatlands ecosystem. Visitors can opt for the one mile self guided hike or a three mile loop. The low entry fee of $3 is worth the views. Equipped with drinking water, hats, bug spray, sunscreen, camera, and closed toe shoes, visitors can enjoy the pre-developed Florida. Socks tend to be on the list, too, since the mosquitoes have ankles high on their menus. Biking is allowed, but the preserve closes at 5:00 pm. The Conservancy efforts are to retain Florida's natural resources by removing invasive species and doing burns. The park is open five days a week, closed on weekends, and closed at flood times. Bordered by one of the last undeveloped lakes in central Florida, the preserve is off Scrub Jay Trail and offers a place for individuals to learn to conserve natural Florida. Again, remember the bug spray!
If your group wants to learn more about Florida's citrus crops, why not opt for a tour of orange groves? A cross between a tour company and a rural adventure, the Ivey Groves Fresh Citrus, 2220 Boggy Creek Road off the Florida Turnpike, will give you a whole new perspective on fresh orange juice by allowing you into the groves before sampling Florida's liquid sunshine! This destination is great for nature lovers who don't want to get to far off the beaten path, but want a break from the roller coasters. This destination makes for a great Florida family photo with luscious oranges hanging in the background.
"Make it to Mackinson" should be the mantra of any nature lover in Kissimmee. Mackinson Island is a 132 acre oasis in the northern third of Lake Tohopekaliga where birders will want to make their own nest in for the duration of their Kissimmee stay. A boat ride is the only way to reach this fantastic oasis. That can easily be arranged through Scenic Eco Tours and their trustworthy Captain Rick. If a day long hike doesn't interest you, settle for a one hour pontoon boat ride/tour. Their 24 foot long boats will glide by gators and take passengers to see bald eagles soar across the lake. Boat fares cost $25 for adults and $15 for ages 6 - 12 for the kids with 5 years old and under free. Only 13 passengers can be accommodated on the tritoons, so reservations are highly encouraged and group discounts are available. The boat rides leave from Big Lake Toho Marina. The 3.5 miles of hiking trails are open dawn to dusk on the island and there is no cost for entry to the island, but remember that the boat is the only means of accessing it. Toho, as the lake is called by locals, is high on nature lovers' lists in the area. Bug spray and sunblock are strongly encouraged.
So, don't let the costumed cartoon characters define Kissimmee for your Florida vacation. Mother Nature still has "one up" on the cute mouse in the theme parks!
