Diversity is the spice of life, or so the old saying goes, and today it is being played out for us as never before. It is true in education, in sports, in the world of business, in science, in entertainment and internationally. Although to be diverse is commendable, it has its negative connotations.
Education:
It is in school where diversity is first met and it is what makes this new experience such an adventure and at the same time it is what makes it frightening and problematic. Steadily it is becoming more of a problem but as the world of education strives to prepare their teachers in how to work with a classroom where approximately one out of every four is culturally diverse, these will diminish.
For the first year or so that a student is in a new school setting, it is to be expected that he will be competing with only his own past performance and not with the other students. As I see it, and I can assure you I do not have a clear picture of what goes on in today's schools, there is entirely too much emphasis on testing and grades.
What's wrong with letting the students show you how they learn best? Too many school failures will tell you they had to learn this the hard way. I say stop making this diverse setting such a problem. It will cease to be one if we get out of the way and let it evolve naturally. There are worse things in life than not being the best in everything; and heading that list is failing at being the diverse person each of us was created to be.
In Sports:
Diversity is the name of the game. And no where is this played out better than at the Olympic games that's hosted by a different country. China is the next country up to bat and they are readying their global image for their important time on the world's stage.
It is truly a spectacle to watch from our ringside seats in front of our television screens. We watch as the whole world proudly hoist their national flags as a world of color and hope and good intentions parade past our living rooms. Their talents are diverse and we salute this diversity.
And while all this is exciting and positive there is always a few l disappointments and unexpected outcomes. These make for negative comment and dashed hopes. Sometimes one can't help but feel it is a little much, competition wise, and we are concerned that there are too much emphasis on taking home that gold or silver medal.
Is it worth the risk of their compromising their integrity? This happens infrequently,
