We are talking about a communication device. Isolation does not come from trying to increase your communication. The only way you can see any form of isolation is probably being in a location where you do not want to talk to near by people so you pick up your cell phone and put the elbow out keeping people at bay. With the whole text message and basic voice mail and web browsers we have on cell phones these days, you can be connected at nearly all times, with the use of sites like jaiku and twitter and having the whole texting to your profile in sms, you are constantly connected.
We need to remember the emergency issues situations that a cell phone comes in the handiest, like when your daughter has a flat and is on a back road between redneck vill and ghetto town. Or there is a really bad medical situation or a fire or flood or local land lines are all down from wind. so your ability to communicate in times where you never could have created before cell phones has increased.
Places like flickr and photobucket or the sites taht let you email from your the images you capture in a day, to later update when you get home to your computer, increase your communication with people who do not speak the same language as you.
See people who are "doomsday" minded are the problems here. People who do not understand the new times we have evolved into with the introduction of internet and inexpensive small cell phones, are the ones who do not know what is going when you are walking around talking on your cell phone. The turn their nose up at you and scawf and huff about how you are so antisocial because you are on a cell phone and not talking to that stranger. the issue there is you are on the phone and do not want to end your call,so you do not put that idiot Neanderthal in his/her place. They do not understand why you are texting someone while you are sitting on the bus/train and not talking to them. Why do they not realize that you and many others probably where not going to talk to them anyway ?it is that person who thinks the world is losing it's ability and desire to communicate and keep in touch.
