The skinny jean has been splashed all over the runways, and you can find them virtually everywhere, ranging from K-Mart to Neiman Marcus. The style is seen mostly on tall, thin women, hence the name "skinny jean". But, curvy chicks around the globe shouldn't fret, because there's no doubt that the skinny jean can be worn on any body type. As a 5'5 fashionsta with wide thighs who was hesitant to purchase a pair of these jeans, I soon realized that I should embrace my body type, not work against it. Here are some tips and tricks that I follow when hunting for the perfect pair of skinny jeans.
1) Wear skinny jeans with a tunic or long top.
Plus-sized women have long been told that they should wear loose shirts and unflattering, long sweatshirts to hide their well-endowed figures. This is definitely not the case in this situation; wearing a fitted tunic with a skinny jean will slim you and make your jeans look fabulous. I suggest Torrid's red double breasted coat; it cuts at the mid-thigh, so it gives you just enough coverage to pull off the skinny jeans. This item is a bit of a splurge at $128, but it's a winter basic that will carry you through years of wear and tear. Paired with Tory Burch's black patent leather ballerina flats, people's heads will be turning for all the right reasons when you strut the city streets.
2) Try a skinny jean in a dark wash for a sophisticated look.
We all know that the stonewashed jean is so 80s; for a more modern look that is not reminiscent of Paula Abdul, try a skinny jean in dark blue or black that will have you looking sleek in no time. Dark washes often come with whiskers, light lines that are drawn under the front pockets to create a fashionable illusion, but these trashy add-ons are anything but. Avoid whiskers at all costs, because the horizontal stripe pattern that the whiskers are drawn in make your hips look wider, and make the pair of jeans that you're wearing seem like you purchased them at your nearest trailer park. Another tip? Opt for a higher rise, as the super-low rises on jeans expose way too much, are unflattering and uncomfortable. I've found a flattering skinny jean in a dark wash in Torrid's online boutique. At only $62, Freestyle Revolution's Jet Wash skinny jean comes with a '32 inseam, so there's lots of room to spare. A cashmere sweater in a bright hue, a scarf in an earth tone, and Marc by Marc Jacobs suede moccasins will make these jeans a showstopper.
3) Classy boots and skinny jeans are a match made in
