Strategies for taking the ACT science reasoning test

by Jack Roviere

Created on: October 17, 2007

The ACT science reasoning test is arguably the easiest section of the exam, because, as its name even states, it does not measure knowledge of science, but reasoning. Although sections like reading are based on the same idea, I believe that science is ultimately less intensive than reading because the length of an average science problem setup is much shorter than the ACT reading passages.

The best strategy to use when taking this part of the exam is to cut away superfluous information. The test will give directions and background information that will take up precious time but is utterly unnecessary. For this section, you should initially skip this information and go directly to the questions, then find out which questions correspond to which graphs, and then analyze the graphs to find the question. As long as you know how to read a graph or a table, then it doesn't matter if you don't know the technicality of the subject, because the test does not base itself on your knowledge of technicality. Following this advance, you should be able to finish the exam with decent time.

In this case, the only obstacle to scoring better is your knowledge of reading scientific data presented in charts, graphs, or reports. If you know that you have a weakness in this, please try to learn the basics of graphs, such as independent variable and dependent variable placement along axes and what this theoretically means when finding results, for the ACT science reasoning test.
