There's a huge difference between public school and private school even in today's world. Children who are taught in private schools, or who are home schooled in my opinion get a much better education. Private schools and home-schooled children are better prepared for the world.
Many children that are schooled at home can take courses that they are interested in. They can keep their own hours, have gym at the local Y, and these kids excel in academics. I have been having an internal debate for years now about taking my kids out of public school and home schooling them or put them in private school for years.
My kids both love the schools they are at. But, personally I don't think they are getting an education that will prepare them for the outside world. They are not taught any manners, any respect for themselves or for anyone else, and their grammar and spelling is atrocious. Personally, I think public school is just preparing kids for college, and not the world of work, or the world for that matter.
Public school can't possibly handle every child that walks through their doors and their personal problems. Obviously smaller classrooms in private schools can handle the kids better and they get a better education because they get more attention. But public school has many more activities offered for the kids. So if they want to an engineer, they have activates, that go along with that, and they have the funding to start up such an activity.
Kids in public schools aren't getting the skills they will need for life. The kids seem to be in the mindset that they have to be in a group. Everyone must work together, and there isn't anyone stressing that kids can be individuals. When kids are home schooled they are individuals because they're not at school all day. But, these kids (and yes, I've met some,) have great manners, can think for themselves, and learn how to do things on their own.
This is preparing them for the world of work. Sure, you might be working in a group sometimes, and have meetings, but for the most part you're working on your own. A person has to learn how to do things on his own to become a mature adult. For the most part you won't be leaving high school to go to college with the same friends you had your entire life.
Public schools should make it mandatory for kids to not only learn their ABC's, how to read, and their math skills, but they should be teaching them how to dress and act in a job interview. They should be teaching them about balancing a checkbook, basic cooking skills, and how being an individual is okay. Schools today should be teaching kids on how to make themselves stand out in our competitive world instead of trying to belong to a group.
