Healthy eating should be an individual's choice. Period, end of story. And, I don't know how any other point of view ever took root. Since when did we get so socialistic? Why would we want our government making personal choices for us? Could they even get a plan of the ground? I don't think so.
In post 9/11 America we have a major problem with citizens feeling too insecure to make their own decisions. It's understandable that we don't want to make national security decisions ourselves, but why do we think the government should decide what we eat, drink, wear, or say? Lately we've been passing legislation that is chipping away at our constitutional freedoms. Of course, this all started to get a grip on a global terrorism problem, but the ends defiantly do not justify the means.
Now it has come into question if the government should pass legislation to enforce better eating habits. I'm going to reiterate by saying, "No, no, no, what the heck are we thinking." There is a level of government responsibility here, but legislation is not the way to solve it.
The problem the government should fix, our schools. Our kid's cafeterias are being sold to the lowest bidder. Many of them are served by the same companies serving slop in penitentiaries. Yes, they're serving the same menu both places. Hamburgers, sloppy joes, pizza, French fries. Most parents would never serve this crap to their children day in and day out, but it's all they serve at schools!
If the kids survive lunch healthy then they usually grab soda and candy from the vending machines. And, what I hate most of all. Teachers in kindergarten give out candy, cake, and fruit punch as rewards for good behavior. My mother-in-law is a teachers aid and she gives her students around 40 grams of sugar everyday before she sends them home.
So who do I think should be responsible for what you eat? You, and we need to reform our schools to support healthy eating. Should the federal or state government help? No, but you should pressure your school district into change. After all how many bad eating habits did you develop by the time you were ten? Probably most of them.
