In psychology severe narcissism is a recognized personality disorder. There is a major difference between someone thinking of highly of themselves compared to someone being an actual narcissist. Narcissist's love and adore themselves to a fault and truly believe that they are the center of the universe.
A narcissist seeks constant attention, money, power, only thinking about themselves. An example of of a true narcissist John Mark Karr, the man who ended up in the news after he wrote the police to confess that he was the killer of six year old JonBenet Ramsay.
Even after DNA tests proved that he was not the murderer he went on to say he committed the crime. He loved being in the spotlight so much so that he would even go to prison for a crime he did not commit, as long as he gained attention for it.
Based on the definition of narcissism, I would disagree that we are part of a narcissistic society. You could say that we are self centered, self absorbed, and even greedy, but most people don't cross the line into all out narcissism.
For every narcissist in our society there is also a person who dedicates their lives to helping others. If you look around you'll see that there is a lot of giving going on in our society.
There are many people who do volunteer work, communities that join together to help others through fund raising. We are not a society who is focused solely on ourselves, we do care about others.
I personally believe that any decline in our society is due to our present day lack of parenting, and subtle cultural changes, such as children being raised by video games and violent television shows, and a less than perfect education system.
Children home alone after school watching music videos that resemble pornography and television advertisements for birth control pills targeted at fifteen year olds, isn't exactly a step forward for mankind.
We are also guilty of being a very materialistic society who places far to much value on houses, clothing, cars, etc. Far too much emphasis is placed on money and not enough focus is placed on helping others who are less fortunate.
Could our society be better? Yes. Are we evil narcissists who think only about ourselves? Not even close.
