Do You Really Want a Home-Based Business?
Well, this is a very good question. I went from working in a corporate environment to owning a couple of businesses. One of those businesses is a Partnership in a home repair company. This was a bigger adjustment than I thought.
Here is my experience. Below is a list of essential elements an entrepreneur needs.
While working over-time in the corporate environment prior to marriage, I juggled part-time jobs and I engaged in selling my crafts and was an independent service contractor.
But none of these things prepared me for the reality of irregular paychecks, financial loss due to customer fraud or ignorance, irregular work hours, no spectacular insurance coverage paid for by the company, a ton of paperwork, more interruptions than imaginable (and I don't have kids!), or the sudden change in lifestyle.
I'd daydream of a pastoral life-style with chickens, green verdant pastures, crisp fresh air, no neighbors or sirens. I got that dream. I just didn't think I'd miss the bustle of co-workers or helping customers all day.
Sure, there's lots of things I don't miss about them. The petty office politics, discrimination or the political-correctness thugs are a few of those.
For many people, the answer wanting a home-based business can easily be "Yes". The key is to decide whether to quit your day job or not.
There are multiple ways to determine what's right for you. Some of those include books called WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE, DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND THE MONEY WILL FOLLOW, etc. But it boils down to the following:
-What is your ultimate goal or dream?
-How much chaos can you tolerate over the long haul?
-How do you handle change or adversity?
-What are your risks?
-Do you need external pressure to perform and to follow through?
-Do you currently manage your time and money well?
-How good are you at setting and juggling priorities?
Don't be discouraged if you answered in the negative to any of those. It just means things might be more difficult. Everything changes whether we want them to or not. Be the rudder that directs the change in your favor. Also, know that you're in for a challenging and rewarding ride.
Moreover, just like in marriage, there will be difficult times. Loving what you 'do' is just as important as loving your spouse. So, when in hard times, can you remember that you love what you do? When having an argument with a spouse, remembering that you love them keeps one from being self destructive. Loving what you do in a home-based business is like that. Understanding and employing this concept will keep you going.
